             CORRUGATED BOX BASICS

Corrugated boxes consist of two structural elements; the facings (liner) and the fluting structure (corrugated medium).

The liner and medium are combined on a corrugator with adhesive. The end product is a corrugated sheet, which is available in single, double, or triple wall.

Liner is most often of kraft (brown) color, but white liner (oyster white and bleached white is also available)

The fluting structure can come in a variety of sizes, which include A,B,C, E and F. Each flute size has specific characteristics that influence the boxes resistance against crushing, and printing quality.

There are several grades of paper used to make corrugated board. This property is referred to as basis weight. Basis Weight is expressed in pounds per thousand square feet.

When different combinations of basis weight liners and mediums are combined on the corrugator, a corrugated sheet is produced. This sheet will comply to a specific mullen or bursting test.

The size of a corrugated box is always given by its inside dimensions. The order should always be in this sequence; length, width, depth.

The first two dimensions (length and width)  are based on the opening of the box.
